About these games

Black gives up the e5-pawn with 8...d5 and, after 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5, plays 11...c6 to support the knight on d5 and free the bishop for ...Bd6. For the pawn, Black gets quick development and pressure against the white king, often with the queen heading for h3. White, still with the e1-rook exposed and the queenside undeveloped, aims to survive the attack and later use the extra pawn.

Kamsky–Ivanchuk turned into a closed fight after 12.d4 Bd6 13.Re2 Bg4 14.f3 Bh5 15.Bxd5 cxd5. Black clamped the kingside with ...f5 and ...f4, then advanced ...a5 and ...a4 while White shuffled the knight between f1 and h2. After 29.b3 the score dropped from −0.30 to −1.81. The break 34...b4 opened lines, and 40.Rc2 went from −1.47 to −4.85. Black's reply 41...Bg6 let the score fall back to −0.71. From 43.Re5 Black stayed more than two pawns ahead, beat off White's sacrifices on h5 and h8, and won after 53...Qg6.

So–Onischuk took the modern route with 12.Re1 Bd6 13.d3 Bf5 14.Qf3 Qh4 15.g3 Qh3. White let 16...Bxd3 regain the pawn and forced queens off with 21.Kxg2. With the queens gone, White's better structure counted, reaching +1.30 at 26...Nc2. After 28.Rd1 the score slipped to +0.40. Then 30...Bb1 jumped it from +0.49 to +4.84, and 34...Re2+ raised it further to +7.15. White won after 36.Be6. Unlike Game 1, White gave up the extra pawn early and won by converting the endgame.
