About these games

Black answers the Spanish bishop with 3...f5, striking at e4 at once and aiming to open the f-file for a kingside attack after ...fxe4. White can meet the gambit quietly by supporting the centre with d3 or by developing with Nc3 to hit the advanced pawn. The play usually revolves around Black's loosened kingside and whether the half-open f-file gives Black enough activity.

Caruana–Radjabov went 4.d3 fxe4 5.dxe4, and after 7.Bxc6 bxc6 8.Nxe5 White gave up the bishop pair for a pawn and doubled c-pawns. Radjabov regained the pawn with 11...Nxe4, but the exchanges left Black with weak c-pawns, and White's edge grew to +3.03 by 33...Re7. The queens came off with 38...Rxf4; 39.Ra3 let the score drop to +1.67, but 40...g5 lifted it back to +3.56 as Caruana's rook won the a- and c-pawns. After 45...Bxa2 the score reached +5.99, and White won.

Karthik–Erigaisi took the sharp 4.Nc3 route: after 4...fxe4 5.Nxe4 d5 Black built a broad centre, gave up the bishop with 7...Bxf3 and castled long with 9...O-O-O. Rather than suffering a damaged structure as in Game 1, Black got active pieces; the queens came off with 20...Nxc6. After 24.Nc6+ the score fell from −1.54 to −3.12, and Erigaisi's d-pawn and kingside pawns decided matters, reaching −6.74 after 42.h6. Black won.
