About these games

After 6.Bg5 White pins the f6-knight and threatens to double Black's pawns with Bxf6. Black answers with 6...Bd7 instead of the usual ...e6, developing a piece and preparing ...Rc8 and sometimes ...Qa5 to press on the c-file. White normally plays Qd2 and castles long, which leaves opposite-side kings and a race between White's kingside pawns and Black's queenside play.

Svidler–Dreev followed that pattern. After 7.Qd2 Rc8 8.Nxc6 Bxc6 9.f3, White castled long and pushed the h-pawn. Black swapped the light-squared bishops with ...Bb5 and opened the centre with 17...d5, but by 21...O-O the score was +2.45 as White's 20.g4 was already rolling. White then broke through on the kingside: after 26...Nd5 (+3.12) came 28.Rxc3, giving back the exchange, and 29.gxh6. Black's 29...b4 lifted the score from +4.84 to +8.22. White's pawns advanced with 30.hxg7 and 32.h6, and 37.g8=Q+ brought White the win.

Wei Yi–Adly took a different route with 8.f4 and the early break 10.e5. After ...Nxd4 and ...Qa5, White kept a lead, and 17...Bb6 raised it from +1.19 to +3.16. Once the queens came off with 18...Bxa5, 21.Rh6 threw most of that away, dropping the score from +4.04 to +1.16. Unlike Game 1, Black then took over in a queenless position, using the bishop pair and the h-pawn. From 27.Bc5 Black stayed more than two pawns ahead, and 34.Bc3 moved the score from −3.20 to −4.98. The h-pawn reached h2, the rooks came off, and Black won the bishop ending after 48...Bd5.
