About these games

After 5.c4 White has pawns on e4 and c4, the Maroczy Bind, which clamps the d5 square and makes Black's freeing ...d5 and ...b5 hard to achieve. Black fianchettoes with ...g6 and ...Bg7, castles early and looks for counterplay on the dark squares and against the c4 pawn, while White aims to use the extra space, either on the queenside or with a kingside pawn advance.

Timman–Jussupow, Linares 1992, went 8.Be2 b6 9.O-O Bb7 with 10...Nh5, aiming the knight at f4. White pushed with 13.f4. Black gave up the dark-squared bishop with 13...Bxc3 14.bxc3, and White followed with 15.e5 and 18.f5. After 19.Bh6 White won the exchange with 20.Bxf8. At 22...Ne4 the evaluation moved from +0.97 to +2.77, and White stayed more than two pawns ahead from then on. 27.Qd4+ took it to +8.24, 29...Rd8 allowed mate in 9, and White won after 30.Qxb7.

Wang Hao–Bu Xiangzhi, Chinese Team Championship 2017, followed the main 8...d6 instead: Black exchanged with 10...Nxd4, then played 11...Bc6, 12...a5 and 14...Nc5 to pressure the queenside rather than wait for a kingside attack. The score drifted from +0.60 at 12...a5 to +0.22 at 27...Rdc8. Queens came off with 31.Rxd6, and 32.Bg1 moved the evaluation from −0.26 to −1.30. Black then struck with 32...Nxc4. After 34.Bxe6 the score went from −2.43 to −4.91, Black's rooks invaded on the first rank, 40...Raa1 reached −6.94, and Black won after 41...Kf7.
