About these games

After 2...g6 Black fianchettoes the king's bishop before moving the d-pawn, and 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4 Nf6 lets White recapture with the queen in the centre. Black aims to gain time against the queen with ...Nc6, while White chooses between e5, kicking the f6-knight, and quieter development with Nc3. The g7-bishop's long diagonal is central to Black's play.

Najer–Guseinov: after 5.e5 Nc6 6.Qa4 Nd5 7.Qe4 Nc7, White castled long and Black struck at once with 9...b5 and 10...b4. White grabbed a pawn with 17.Rxd7, then gave a rook for knight and pawn with 21.R1xd5, and after 23.Rxd5 the queens were off. Black's rook and bishop faced knight, bishop and two extra pawns. Guseinov's king marched to c4, and 36.bxa4+ moved the score from −0.02 to −1.22. Black traded bishop for knight with 40...Bxb2+, took the a-pawn with 41...Rxa4, and after 43.g4 (−2.07 to −3.58) 43...Ra3 was the final move. Black won.

Amin–Savchenko: 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Qa4 d6 7.e5 forced the queens off by 10.Nxa4, and 10...bxc6 left Black with broken queenside pawns. Instead of Game 1's opposite-side attacks, White pressed those weak pawns with the bishop pair, winning c5 with 24.Nxc5. White gave the exchange with 27.Re3, but 29.Kf2 (+1.05 to +2.50) and 31.Ra1 (+1.12 to +2.73) kept a clear edge. 34.cxd5 won a knight, and White converted the endgame, finishing with 56.Kf3. White won.
