About these games

After 9.Bxf6 gxf6 10.Nd5 Bg7, White gives up the dark-squared bishop to wreck Black's kingside pawns and plant a knight on d5, aiming at the holes on d5 and f5 and at the stranded knight on a3. Black keeps the bishop pair and an open g-file, and usually plays ...f5, ...Ne7 to remove the d5 knight, and the advance ...f4 to gain dark squares and space for a kingside attack.

Polgar–Kasparov began 11.c3 f5 12.Bd3 Ne7, and after 15...f4 and 16.a4 bxa4 White pursued queenside play while Kasparov brought the queen to g5. At 21.Nb4 the score dropped from +0.47 to −1.32, and 21...d5 let Black give up the a8 rook for a direct attack. After 24...Bxf2 and 25...Qxg2 White's king ran to the queenside, and 29.Qd3 took the evaluation from −0.84 to −4.57. The queens came off on move 32, Black's bishops kept up the pressure, and 37.Kc3 made it −5.19. Black won after 45...Rf4.

Caruana–Kamsky took a different path: 11.Bd3 and 12.Nxe7 came first, then 15.Qh5 and the knight route Nc2-b4xa6 to win queenside pawns. After 16...Be6 the score rose from +0.51 to +2.33, and 19...fxe4 made it +3.55. Black's kingside play with ...f3 and ...Qg5 achieved little, as White used the light squares and pushed the a-pawn to a6. White won after 40.Qxe3 at +7.56.
